Dollar Store Book Finds

The other day I found this book, brand new, at the Dollar Tree: Dracula, the Undead, by Dacre Stoker. Dacre Stoker is the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, author of the classic Dracula. I haven't read the book yet -- reading my other dollar store book find right now. Here's a blurb from Amazon on Dracula the Undead:

"The official sequel to Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula, written by his direct descendant and endorsed by the Stoker family. The story begins in 1912, twenty-five years after the events described in the original novel. Dr. Jack Seward, now a disgraced morphine addict, hunts vampires across Europe with the help of a mysterious benefactor."

I'm looking forward to reading this, I love good Vampire stories (not the slow motion teen angst of Twilight stuff) and I also love the time period of the late 1800s into the early 1900s. So. My other book find, for a buck, at the Dollar store: Whitley Strieber's The Omega Point: Beyond 2012. I wasn't going to get it at first, not sure why, haven't read Strieber in years. Though I do keep up with him and respect him. But something made me go back and pick up the book and I'm glad I did. I haven't finished it, but so far, it has really kept my attention! I'll be posting more on the book at Animal Forteana and UFO Mary.

Must Be a Slow News Day for Mad Makow

James Rich, Beside Herself, acrylic on canvas

This is so old school Women's Studies 101; Henry Makow ("Mad" Makow I call him) has reposted his paranoid rant from 2001: savethemales.ca - "Vagina Monologues" - Porn Play Debased Women. Makow is, as always, hyperbolic in his infinite campaign against feminism, gays, the Illuminati/Satanists, and Jews. They're all in it together, don't you know.

One of Makow's many surrealistic opinions on what women are really about is that once feminists discover the truth about the evil agenda that lives within, these women are doomed. Doomed! Because all that's left for these women is to become gay:

"The Vagina Monologues" presents a sad picture of life at the dead-end of feminism. It is an anguished cry for male love by a generation of women deceived by feminism, who now have no choice but to become lesbians.
Something about the play has Makow worked up, for he uses the word "steamy" twice in his denouncement:
the play provides a steamy experience of sexual intimacy.
"The Vagina Monologues" quickly becomes a steamy chronicle of lesbian sex
Parsing the twilight language in Makow's writing is always fun; I'm sure his use of the word "flavor" in the following is inadvertent but it made me laugh:
Forgive me for what follows but I am trying to convey the pornographic flavor of this so-called play.
Makow writes that "fixation" on one's genitals is "pure homosexuality." I'm serious here, is anyone out there listening to this fool?  Sadly, and more to the point, frighteningly, the answer is yes. Of course Makow's a clown, but what's scary is that there are plenty of both men and women who follow his misogynistic philosophies and those people are very serious. Furthermore, his biggest fan seems to be Jeff Rense, who happily posts links to Makow's current articles on a regular basis.

I wondered how long it would take Makow to get into the world domination by evil feminist-Jew-lesbians via their Illuminati ways shtick. No matter what the topic of his rants are -- it could be recipes for jello salad or whatever -- he brings it all around to the insidious plots to rule teh wolrd by lesbian-jew-feminists.
Even though the subject of Makow's current piece is The Vagina Monologues, he goes from theater critic to paranoid goof ball. Well, he was a paranoid goof ball to begin with, but anyway. He segues into a brief section titled Illuminati Brainwashing, where he once again equates self-empowerment and being educated about one's body to having a "hatred of hetrosexuality." Next section: Agitprop, where Makow discusses the "tactics" used by Communists, which, don't ya know, are also used by the evil pinko-jew-lesbian-feminist cabal:
We must face the fact that feminism is a homosexual movement in deadly competition with heterosexuality. It is part of a wider covert war aimed at subverting Western civilization and enslaving society.
Mrs. June Cleaver (Barbara Billingsley) in her kitchen
As I mentioned earlier, the comments left on Makow's site are disturbing. Makow may be a fruitcake: old, stale, and moldy, left far too long on a crusty
contact-papered shelf in June Cleaver's kitchen, but I can't ignore the fact that there are those that take Makow seriously. One comment left by "Phil" puts the The Vagina Monologues in the same category as torture and war:
Dr. Makow – thanks for your expose of this popular pornographic play. It is a sign of a very sick culture that things like this are so easily accepted by society these days, along with torture as official policy, pre-emptive wars, and the slaughter of innocents.
I can't speak to the play itself as a play, since I've never seen the play, only having seen various scenes throughout the years. Something about the play always struck me as, while empowering and all that good stuff, as also kind of do-gooder upper middle class bourgeoisie tripe.  But regardless of if I've seen the play or not, it's clear Makow's issues with the play are with women taking control of their own bodies and educating themselves. Finding offense at basic sexuality is such a sad yet ridiculous response to have in these times, (any times) and then equating that with the downfall of society while ignoring the real stuff -- you know, like the world literally cracking open --  is truly bizarro. So, in that context, one question among many questions, is why does Jeff Rense insist on promoting Henry Makow?

Question Has Been Posed:" Is Whitley Strieber Advocating Implants?"

I followed this link from Lesley's Debris Field, and was astonished, because I'd forgotten about Rigorous Intuition. So many forums and blogs and people. so little time. There's a lot there about Strieber and The Key, which I haven't yet read, and I don't know what to think about any of it. But it's interesting as hell, that is for sure.

I've just skimmed what's all there, so can't comment much. But a couple of things: seems Daniel Pinchbeck, who I greatly admire, has issues with Strieber, as I've commented on the past as well. Two psychonauts I respect at odds with each other. Always interesting. Then there's the late Mac Tonnies' thoughts on Strieber (Mac being another person I admired) -- which are very intriguing -- referenced on the RI OP. But what to think? Seems as wild in many ways as the simple idea Strieber is saying he experienced exactly what he did, indeed, experience. Can we fault the "experiencer" for stumbling around and trying to process the incredible? What else is he/she to do? And what of the enigmatic remark from the author of this post at RI about "psychic" interplays? via computer?:
"I posted a response suggesting an alternate explanation to Strieber’s paranoid insistence that sinister forces were behind the edits, namely, that Whitley had unconsciously altered the text via some sort of psychic interface with his software (something which has almost certainly happened in my experience)."
That's quite a concept, one that's never entered my mind. And yet, I had something close to that myself once...does this mean the computer can be a conduit for communication for "them" as with ghost/hauntings -- those spirits and energies that use electricity to communicate? Which would mean Strieber's mind wasn't playing tricks on him, but "they" were.

I'm not defending anyone here, nor, attacking. Both seem downright stupid as well as silly and petty. When it comes to the individual and his or her experiences, we can't dare to tell them how to go about their journey, or be so presumptuous, as so many are in this field, to tell them how to interpret those experiences. Rest in Peace Ms. Francis: An Esoteric Look

I was sad to hear that Anne Francis had died, at age 80, of pancreatic cancer. I blogged about Ms. Francis at Pulp Jello, with a link to the very excellent Monster Island News, who has a lovely post about her.
Aside from her role in the classic sci-fi Forbidden Planet, Anne Francis was had her own way cool TV show in the sixties: Honey West. I loved that show! I was ten years old, and watched it religiously. Boy, I wanted to be her when I grew up!
In looking at clips of the show on YouTube, I noticed a couple of estoeric themed episodes. One is The Owl and the Eye, where Honey West is hired to protect a statue of an owl:

This episode clip is titled The Abominable Snowman:

Richelle Hawks' Medusa's Ladder: Patron Saint of UFOs

Women of Esoterica contributor Richelle Hawks  has a wonderful new column (Medusa's Ladder) at BoA entitled Patron Saint of Flying Saucers. As usual, Richelle writes beautifully. In this article, Hawks writes about a lovely book find from 1925 that evokes flying saucers:

Considering it more closely, I was getting a strange, provocative, sci-fi, atomic age kind of vibe from it and it was a very peculiar feeling, quite anachronous. I knew from the book's feel, particular materials, fonts, and agewear that it was older, an interbellum relic. Inspecting the title pages, I was correct—1925. What could this more mod feeling be, then?
I sat down with the book and considered the feeling and the answer hit me suddenly in a flash of recognition—the bottom Saint-scene transformed before my eyes: it's a classic UFO form.
Inspecting it further, I found there were even corresponding details. The window/doors of the coliseum, are fairly close to the place where portholes are described, and there are even spectators in the places where UFO occupants have been described.

Richelle Hawks : Medusa's Ladder

Speaking of Richelle Hawks, saints, and UFOs, a reminder to readers that you can download a free collection of articles by yours truly on Mary and UFOs, including Richelle's article A New Vision:The Virgin Mary Tree of Salt Lake City

Mad Henry Makow: Feminism, A Lesbian Disorder

Best Mad Makow line; in where he describes feminism as:
"An essentially lesbian disorder. . . "
Makow is good at one thing; no matter what the topic, he manages to weave into the article all of the following: misogony, homophobia, anti-Semitism, paranoia, uber-patriotism, and warnings of Satanic-Illuminati-Communist wars for our souls. In his current piece Feminists Surprised their Daughters are Sluts, Makow once again demonstrates this talent.
"Women's rights" indeed! Feminism is Communist in origin. Communists view women as a public utility. It is classic divide-and-conquer, satanic subterfuge which now extends far beyond gender.
Henry Makow is author of Cruel Hoax: Feminism and the New World Order.
Feminism is elite social engineering designed to destroy gender identity by making women masculine and men feminine.  Increasingly heterosexuals are conditioned to behave like homosexuals who generally don't marry and have children. Courtship and monogamy  are being replaced by sexual promiscuity, prophesied in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.

Gary Haden: The Hyperbolic Chamger: Bozotopia, Or Don't Blame the Clowns for What the Circus Did to Them

Another stunningly excellent article by Gary Haden on David Jacobs academic UFO research meltdown, and Emma Woods: The Hyperbolic Chamber: Bozotopia, Or Don't Blame the Clowns for What the Circus Did to Them. The comments, many from Emma Woods, and others mentioned in Gary's post, are as much a part of the article as Haden's content, so be sure to read those as well.

I left a comment over there, remarking that I still find it astounding that so few in UFO Land are actively discussing this, and, worse, among those that are, many are defending Jacobs, seeing him as victim, misunderstood, a person stalked by an obsessive, mentally unbalanced female. It is simply unbelievable.

Aside from Gary Haden, UFO Magazine, in its current issue, has addressed this, with, among others, an excellent article by Jeremy Vaeni. Vaeni and Jeff Ritzmann have been discussing this since the beginning, and, given a place for Emma Woods to speak. (See the Paratopia list feed for episodes.) Researcher Raymond Fowler has left a few encouraging post at UFO Magazine's blog.

But overall, the majority of voices out there remain silent, or give the aura of boredom surrounding this.

Frank Warren Interview with Francis Barwood (Phoenix Lights)

Frank Warren's UFO Chronicles interviews Francis Barwood,  the ex-city councilwoman who tried to get her collegues involved in investigating the UFO sightings in Arizona in March of 1997. Hat tip to Lesley at The Debris Field for link. Unfortunately at the time, Barwood was met with denial and ridicule when she tried to get, at her constituents' request, information about the sightings.

Insidious Round About Book Banning

Vintage children's books -- vintage being anything printed before 1985 -- are now illegal. You can't sell them, Goodwills and libraries, etc. are urged to remove these books from their shelves, and sellers of vintage books, on-line and not, are also urged to stop selling their books.

Some places have gone so far as to burn these books, others have put them in storage, and others, in acts of civil disobedience, ignore this new law. (The law was passed in January of this year.) Others however are paranoid and have stopped dealing with vintage books altogether. There seems to be a loophole; that you can deal in the children's books as long as they're listed as collectibles and sold to collectors -- adult collectors -- of children's vintage literature.

The reason for this law? Lead. The U.S. government has decided that the lead content in printer's ink used before the 1980s (though they admit they're not sure exactly when) is dangerous to children, even though there's been no documented cases of lead poisoning concerning books and children.

This is a weirdly under-reported story. For more see my item on my blog Octopus Confessional, which has many links to sources about this story.

I plan to keep reporting on this; for example, I'm curious how many people are aware of this law, what the local schools, libraries and booksellers are doing, and so on.

Ann Druffel on Tim Binnall

Ann Druffel appears on Tim Binnall's BOA. I haven't listened to it yet, (just about to though!) but I'm sure it's going to be very interesting!

Druffel is co-author, (D.Scoot Rogo) of The Tujunga Canyon Contacts, a classic in UFO literature. This book is one of the early books I read on UFOs, and the experience drew me further into the realm of UFOs. Born in Los Angeles and living all over Southern and Northern California, I had a particularly strong reaction to the experiences in that book.

Here are some links: you can order the book via Anomalist Books. And listen to the interview on Tim's site here.

BVM, Bigfoot, Playboy, Darklore, Trickster's Realm

On UFO-Mary I have several new posts, including one on the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine, with it's Virgin Mary like model on the cover. Just in time for the pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I've been experiencing a few synchroniciites related to the image of Mary, as well as Goddess energy in general. It's not surprising to find that when ones attention is really directed at something; UFOs, what have you, the synchronicities appear!

Snarly Skepticism; also the unofficial JREF Watch, I just decided, has an entry on the dangers of Bigfoot research. Yes, dangers. The harm Bigfoot research, and just a "belief" in Bigfoot, must be told! Beware!

Usually my Trickster's Realm column for Binnall of America goes up on Monday, but recently things have been changed around a bit. So my column won't be up until Thursday. I write about the Darklore, Volume II that just came out. Speaking of, it'll make a great gift! You can find out about ordering information at Amazon.com or the Daily Grail site.

It's been snowy here, which I don't like. It's wet, it's cold, what's the point? Fortunately I don't have to go anywhere these days; I"m off for winter break for three weeks. So I'm cozy in my house, trying to work on various writing projects.

And speaking of writing projects, visit my Lulu.com storefront. I plan to have a few more things available -- some for free -- in a few days.

I was going to be on the X-Zone radio show but still sick with some cold/throat thing. I'm much better but my throat still hurts and I sound like a frog. I'm sure in a few days I'll be fine, and will post the date when I know more.

Marian Apparition Book Arrived!

In regards to my post of yesterday about Marian Apparitions and UFOs; I forgot to mention my book arrived today! Heavenly Lights: The Apparitions of Fatima and the UFO Phenomenon, by Joaquim Fernandes and Fina D'Armada.

I don't get to order any more books for a month or so; budget won't allow. SO many books, so little time . . . and money. :(

I'm reading Redfern's Monkey Man book, as well as Chris O'Brien's Mysterious Valley; when I finish those, it's on to the Fatima book.

Katharina Wilson on UFO Sightings Jan. 8th

Kathairina Wilson has an item about her own UFO sightings on Januaury 8, the same night as the mass sightings in Stephenville, Texas on her Alien Jigsaw site. There's a lot more interesting reading on the site, and you can download her book "I Forget What I Was Supposed To Remember" for free.

Farah Yurdozu: Mary Poppins, Alien Abductions, and Gurdijeff.

Farah Yurdozu has a great article in the current issue of UFO Magazine. (Farah is one of our contributors here at Women Of Esoterica.) It's titled Mary Poppins, Alien Abductions, and Gurdijeff. Great title! When I first read the title, I thought it was intriguing and delightful, but couldn't imagine what the three had to do with each other.

While reading the article, I saw why. Farah weaves together these three elements in a way that makes sense. And, there are surprises; things I didn't know about the author of Mary Poppins, but, after reading about her, aren't surprising.

There were three books that had a vivid and intense impact on me when I was young; books that I read over and over again. I still visit them on occasion even now. The Secret Garden,Frances Hodgson Burnett, Jane Erye,Charlotte Brontë, and Mary Poppins, by P. L. Travers. I loved Mary Poppins! I read the other Mary Poppins books too ( ) but Mary Poppins, the first one, remains my favorite. (And, as Farah mentions, the movie, while enjoyable -- I'm a musical junkie -- is nothing like the book at all.)

Farah discusses one part in the book where Mary Poppins and the children see a bright star in the night sky, next thing you know, they're visiting other worlds. That was one of my favorite parts in the book. After reading Farah's article, and given my interest and experience with UFOs, aliens, and related phenomena, that connection between the three: Mary Poppins,Alien Abductions, and Gurdijeff, is easy to understand. And why I related so much to that part of the book. (It's not surprising that books such as Alice in Wonderland, the Oz books, and other books that transport the individual -- usually a child -- to another world resonate with many of us invovled in this area.)

This issue of UFO Magazine is interesting for all kinds of reasons, all the great columnists like Lesley (also a Women of Esoterica contributor), Nick Redfern, and Alfred Lehmberg, as well as the items on the Stephenville UFOs. But getting this issue just for Farah's article is worth it.

Susie Saucer

Read about a children's book in the flying saucer genre on Vintage UFO. I love the artwork!
