Owl Syncrhonicity: Lesley and Regan on BoA; Owls and Skeptoids

Some owl synchronicity here. My current Trickster's Realm column for BoA this week is about Monster Quest's Flatwoods episode, and the skeptiod "rational" explanation that the Flatwoods creature was an owl. Lesley, in her Grey Matters column this week, also for Binnall, makes the very good observation that it's ironic  skeptics use the owl, which is deeply immersed in paranormal, supernatural meaning, to "rationally" explain Flatwoods, Mothman, Kelly Hopskinville, etc. Lesley and I didn't know the other was going to write about owls; just turned out that way. Seems Owl is telling us something. . . (Mike Clelland, are you reading this? :)

See Lesley's Skeptics and Owls (with Some Cats Thrown in for Good Measure) and my Monster Quest's Flatwoods Episode and Joe Nickell's Infamous Owl Theory.

Speaking of owls, I've inducted debunker skeptoid James Mcgaha into the Snarly Skepticism OWL Award bin.

Mine wasn't on owls, but weird that all three of us had a bird theme.

I would hedge a guess that both "True Believers" and "Debunkers" seem to fall squarely in the category of Trickster in Human Form. Both camps are almost identical in that neither side needs to see evidence as their minds are firmly made up with their own preconceived notions. This type of railroaded paradigm always makes Paranormal Research fun with it's convolutions and obfuscations. The Trickster! Open minded skepticism is getting rarer and rarer and it is a bit disconcerting to hear the term "skeptics" get tossed into the same camp as "Debunkers". The two aren't even in the same frame of mind. I don't know if it's because of laziness or a need for a new religion a little of both. It is a phenomenon worthy of a.....skeptical eye.

Cheers,

Erik

Erik, yep.

I love the way you put this;
"This type of railroaded paradigm always makes Paranormal Research fun with it's convolutions and obfuscations. "

Richelle,

That's right! Very odd, all this bird imagery of late...

Ha!

Yes - I am reading this!

Okay - let me begin by saying I've seen a LOT of owls.

That aside, I went to a UFO conference, and sat in on the abductee support group, there were about 20 or so of us in the room. During the 2 hour session, a guy sat there silent and at one point he cautiously asked: "Has anyone Here had any experiences with owls?"

And he nearly jolted out of his chair when EVERYBODY else in the room raised their hand.

He told his (strange) owl story.

The fellow was driving down a dark road at night, and there was an owl standing at the side of the road (on the drivers side). He rolled his window down, and slowed down as he passed. The owl was about 4 feet tall, wearing boots - and the owl seemed very annoyed that he was being seen.

He told us: "I don't think that was an owl."

I've been documenting my owl stories, and I have no idea what (if anything) they might mean.

Mike, love that story, thanks for sharing it here.
"I don't think that was an owl." -- eerie understatement.
