Ghost Hunting Etiquette 102

A ghost, spirit or specter is a compilation of many different elements. First and foremost, it is the essence and energy of a previously living human being lacking all of it’s physical senses, sight, sound, touch, etc. Second, it is a mass of feeling and pure thought. Thirdly, a ghost is a elemental being sustained by an energetically charged environment. Many elements are required to establish the formation of this elusive entity. Energy, first and foremost is essential for it’s existence.
Upon entering an environment where a suspected spirit resides, it is essential to allow the spirit the opportunity to manifest. If the researchers and ghost hunters charge in with lights out and cameras blazing, the spirit may be right intimidated and become reclusive. There must be a common courtesy from both parties for a successful investigation to be fruitful. Poking and provoking the spirit, while occasionally effective, can result in unwanted physical attacks or no results at all.
Let’s review what our basic understanding of ghosts from a scientific standpoint for a moment. All theories and assumed facts based on our experiences, technology and experiments.
First, ghosts vibrate at a higher frequency in their realm than our own due to their lack of physical substance. Our realm having a heavier density and a substantially lower frequency of vibration, causes us to lack the ability to communicate properly with these entities. This assumed fact has been established by the use of electromagnetic field detectors, electronic voice phenomena and various other technology based methods.
Second, ghosts need a substantial amount of energy to manifest in our realm. It is alleged that when an entity is trying to manifest, many amazing environmental changes begin to take place. The area of manifestation becomes increasingly cooler, much colder than it’s surroundings and previous readings of the area. The air becomes more dense and significantly charged with electromagnetic energy, hence the common observation of eye witnesses stating that the hairs on the back of their neck stood up. Batteries and sources of energy are occasionally drained or manipulated. Lights flickering or electronic equipment turning on and off may be an example of energy manipulation upon a spirit’s attempt to complete formation. This, in theory, is the entity attempting to draw as much energy out the area as possible to visibly manifest. A ghost’s energetic temperature signature has been recorded with the help of a thermal camera.
There are many forms that an entity can assume, based on the amount of energy it can consume at that present moment. There is the ominous floating orb of light, the lightweight mist, the dark and sinister looking shadow, various invisible and physically assertive forms and ultimately the fully formed torso apparition. Their abilities to manifest seem to be dependent on the use and availability of some forms of energy. In a home, they utilize lights, batteries and other man-made technologies to enhance their abilities. Outside, where it seems there would be little source of extracting energy, there are ley lines, air charged by naturally occurring friction and electricity as well as various sources of certain rock and minerals.
So, based on this basic information that we living folks have gathered over the years pertaining to the existence of the other side, we can finally put it to good use. My first proposal is that when performing a ghost hunting expedition is to provide an energy source for the entities to utilize. As ghost hunters, much of our technological equipment relies on the premise of being in complete darkness. That is all well and good, but it can deprive the entity of any form of energy to use for manifestation.
In one television episode, our beloved TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) ghost hunters were working on a case concerning a light house. The entities were heard and seen from the very peak of the lighthouse, but throughout the episode and the general stories from eye witnesses, the spirits rarely ventured far from that area. This episode contained some amazing and clear footage of the entities peering over the railing and coming down the lighthouse stairs. It would seem that this was their chosen home due to, in my opinion, the immense power that the giant light emits at a constant rate. I found it interesting how in the event of complete darkness, the entities maintained their visible forms for lengthy periods of time, possibly using the strongest potential and residual energy light source within the area.
One must remember how much work and effort it takes for them to transform themselves to our level. They are barely aware of our presence in general, as well as the fact that they cannot perform efficiently in our realm’s particular density. Where they exist, it is confusing and foggy at best. For us living people, we could not function in an environment with very little oxygen, we would be disorientated and would have extreme difficulty performing even the most simple of actions. This is how it is for those trying to lower their vibrations from a higher vibration realm, except energy is their oxygen.
A couple of theories that substantiates the need for more energy in the air is that of the noticeable paranormal activity increases during electrical storms and barometric pressure changes. With lightening charging all the particles in the air, the air itself becomes a conduit of pure energy for the spirits to utilize.
There are many examples of communication barriers in our own existence. An example is that of a hearing person and a deaf person. We acknowledge the fact that some people are incapable of understanding what we are trying to say with our voice. We then adapt ourselves to their needs. By using sign language we’ve established a bridge for crossing the communication gap. In this compassionate and dignified manner, we are respecting the hearing impaired. A ghost isn’t any different in that respect. We simply need to adapt ourselves and our perceptions to find a way to communicate.
Psychics in general, if they are truly such and not dishonest, emit a particularly high vibration when attempting to communicate with a ghost. A psychic actually raises the particle acceleration of their own vibration within their aura and general surroundings allowing a spirit the opportunity to potentially communicate. Everyone though can alter their aura or energy field to communicate with the other side, it simply requires practice and trust in your own abilities. The adapted energy field that a psychic emits is like a virtual beacon to the paranormal. That is why people who are considered sensitives or empaths are more able to potentially attract and communicate with the desired entities.
But seeing that nowadays we desperately want undeniable and factual proof that the ghosts exist, we must utilize human technology as much as possible. The perfect end result being an actual videotaped interview with a spirit exchanging information.
We are called ghost ‘hunters’ right? Let’s break down the implication of a hunter. A hunter travels to the potential prey’s location, their natural environment. The hunter sets up various traps, baits and strategies as to best capture his opponent, correct? There are certain rules and common senses that the hunter uses to entice his prey, based on observation and research. Should we apply the term ‘hunter’ to ourselves as paranormal investigators, we see that we are attempting to ‘capture’ a certain unpredictable prey. The problem is, we are not complying with the prey’s rules.
If it’s energy the prey desires, we must comply to the rules. Yes?
If ghosts are drawing energy to themselves to create electromagnetic fields, it must be necessary for them to do this in order to manifest and communicate. We must recreate an energy source from which they can draw so that they can charge their existing density in order to allow more efficient permeability of free space. Essentially luring them in as they are enticed by the energy.
If you become a ghost ‘observer’ as well as a hunter, you’re more likely to understand the nature of the prey. When zoos keep animals in captivity, they observe and then recreate the natural environment of the animal to the best of their abilities, to better understand, appreciate and welcome the animal to it’s new habitat.
Shouldn’t we then abide by the natural and unnatural environmental requests of the paranormal? We have been attempting to infiltrate this unnatural environment with our own natural understanding of our own laws of physics. We must adapt our thinking to accommodate the experimental environment and habitat of our chosen test subject.
How can we possibly understand a paranormal idea if we do not entertain the idea of altering our own perceptions of normal.
So, in combining the theories that ghosts need energy to manifest and communicate on our realm, we should then attempt to find a source of energy that can be safely placed within the desired area of effect. I think we may have to play with many forms of energy to find a satisfactory suitor, but with patience and trial and error, we will find it.
Recreating high emissions of electromagnetic energy in itself is very dangerous. Studies show that high levels can cause a human very unpleasant symptoms. Nausea, paranoia and dizziness are among the common symptoms, not to mention hallucinations. Many hauntings have been debunked due to high levels of electromagnetic energy found in a home. Poor wiring and older technology are just a few items that can produce these emissions.
There are many safe forms of creating usable energy. I would suggest trying static electricity. Remember back in science class when the teacher brought out the static ball machine. It’s called a Van DeGraff Generator. It can safely produce between 200,000 and 250,000 volts, creating enough charge to make the average person’s hair stand completely on end. It can literally create a miniature lightening effect within a controlled circumference, therefore charging the atmosphere, possibly enough to help enable a spirit to manifest.
One woman whom contacted me about a potential haunting in her home, said she often heard the sound of static electricity popping before a strange and unexplained paranormal event would occur in her home.
These are just examples in how to expand your perception and help you understand that there are ideas out there yet to be discovered. Don’t limit yourselves and your experiments to only what you have learned from others, explore and trust your instincts. You may just be the one to discover the true secrets hiding behind the paranormal veil.
With all ghost hunting expeditions, safety is number one. Getting the evidence you want is a definite plus, but we must remember to treat both the homeowner and unseen house guest with both respect and dignity.

Ghost Hunting Etiquette 101

Hello everyone! My name is Danielle Lee (with luck, maybe I'm a distant cousin of Ms. Regan Lee :D ). I have been honored by Regan with the invitation to write for you. I'm extremely excited and honored to have this opportunity. I would like to start off my Women of Esoterica adventure with a four part series on the topic of ghost hunting. I hope you enjoy my writing and please feel free to write your comments and experiences.

Thanks, Danielle :D

Ghost Hunting Etiquette 101

The image and perception of a ghost has taken on so many attributes and illusions over the centuries that it is difficult to distinguish the difference as to what is and what isn’t a true haunting.
For some, a ghostly image may be that of a glowing translucent figure that ominously floats from one room of a house to the next, apparently searching for something or someone, unaware of their own demise. For others, poltergeists are demonic or evil entities that spend their eternal days and nights thinking of ways to torture, frighten and manipulate the innocent human beings that happened upon unfortunate territories. The notion is foolish to skeptics who think that a phantom could be nothing more than a person covered with a white sheet, moaning and rattling some chains to disturb the naive and imaginative.
There are many misconceptions about ghosts and the afterlife. Many perceived ghostly activities can be explained quite readily by logic or reason. Residual energy is a definite contending culprit when deciding whether or not there is a spirit prevailing in the area. There are also many other explanations that need to be explored before determining whether a house, location or person, for that matter, are haunted.
Ghost hunters are brave, intellectual and pioneering paranormal scientists and explorers, they courageously enter the domain of a suspected paranormal haunting. They explore locations armed with various technical and instrumental elements, such as cameras, thermometers, EMF detectors, voice recorders and more. Although these well-intentioned individuals are honorably seeking the perplexing truths to the existence of the afterlife, some are lacking knowledge and etiquette in a few essential and spiritual areas.
The first and most important step of ghost hunting is diagnosis. Is it or isn’t it a real ghost? Many questions must be asked of the witnesses to determine if the strange activity or experiences are truly those of a ghost. Residual energy haunting can be determined simply by asking the homeowner, tenant or witnesses if the paranormal experience consisted only of feelings and emotional sensations. Residual energy does not manifest physical consciousness, malevolence or aggression.
Physical evaluation and study of the home or area must be conducted to rule out any logical or reasonable reasons for any odd activity. High concentrations of magnetic fluctuations due to ley lines or man-made technology can create false readings on instruments, as well as alter human perception.
In the event a real haunting, a determination must be made whether actual physical or communicative contact has been made. True ghosts will try to the best of their abilities to make contact of some kind, whether it be by moving items around the area or attempting to address the living while they are in a partially awakened or sleep state. Apparitions, orbs and audible sounds are all common forms of a ghostly presence trying to make themselves known. Often, they will become frustrated or provoked into more assertive attempts to make their points obvious. By poking, pushing or scratching, they prove they do not wish to be ignored.
It would be wise to obtain information pertaining to the history of the home and it’s former residents as to better understand what type of activities, negative or positive may have gone on in the home. Better yet, an honorable and experienced empathic psychic medium can be a very valuable asset to the ghost hunting team. These individuals are specifically tuned into paranormal anomalies and would be able to distinguish what the spirit wants and needs more effectively.
Once the ghost hunter has determined whether or not it is in fact a true haunting, the next step is to attempt to make contact. Almost all ghosts have a message to get across. The messages are often relatively clear. The most common of messages are either ‘hello’ , ‘help’ or ‘get out’! All of which the ghost hunter or home owner needs to acknowledge and value. If not, the entity will simply continue voicing it’s displeasure with your presence.
One way to attempt to make contact with the wayward soul is to simply speak to it aloud and then allow them to respond. Since we humans cannot usually hear their response , a tape recorder is the a good way to capture electric voice phenomena or EVP. Due to the high density of our dimension, the living are often unable to audibly distinguish voices or sounds created in another dimension that is less dense. An ordinary cassette recorder is somehow able to archive a spirit’s voice to manifest. This auditory strategy may support the living and the dead in conversation.
Etiquette is of the most utmost importance when physically and verbally approaching a deceased human being. No matter who officially pays the mortgage and holds the land title, the spirit believes that this is their territory. A ghost hunter, and home owner, must be respectful towards the ghost and their predicament or the investigator is bound to get an adverse reaction or none at all. It’s important to be polite and verbally state your purpose immediately upon approaching the location. Asking the deceased individual’s permission to enter the premises or to take photographs is a great way to show them they are being respected.
One has to anticipate what the ghost may be feeling. They are obviously confused, scared, lonely or defensive. An example of how best to learn to appreciate and anticipate the spirits feelings and reactions is that of a frightened animal. If you approach a confused and terrified cat aggressively and abruptly, what can you expect? Well, obviously the petrified feline will either run away or attempt to hurt you in defense. It’s their natural and instinctive reaction to your assumed invasive presence. An animal has no way of knowing your innocent intentions because they are incapable of understanding or reading your mind.
A ghost isn’t much different, the lines of communication are crossed as it is and they don’t have the full understanding of where they are or what’s happened to them. They’re simply reacting with instinct when wondering why this person with strange instruments is intruding in their home!
In saying that, we mustn’t underestimate their intelligence either, we must simply try to understand and gently coax them into submission. Your advance and attitude towards them is the most important aspect of the experience. Fear is also a factor, if your disposition is that of terror, panic or hysterical behavior , they may feed off of that energy. They can themselves become afraid and unresponsive to your requests.
In their realm, they have very little control of their existence. They wander aimlessly and confused through a foggy existence, wondering what to do next. A human soul can sometimes be tormented by memories of a terrible past. They may be reliving a painful and traumatic event over and over. So when someone comes into their fragile world, poking and prodding, they may lash out to protect themselves. Or worse yet, they may be the type that feels empowered by the fact that they can manipulate or control a living person again. This is usually when a haunting can become dangerous and terribly frightening.
One of the most important things to remember is that this literally used to be a flesh and blood human being. A being’s personality, as well as your own, will continue into the next realm even though your tangible body does not. These entities, when alive, had families, jobs, memories and emotions. They had loved ones and were loved by others. Quite distressingly, some of these souls are bound to this limbo for a potentially horrible and tragic reason. Try to have empathy, consideration and compassion for the state that they are in.
A good point to remember when beginning your ghost hunting adventure, you’ll catch more flies with honey. So enter their home with respect, gratitude and a polite disposition and you may end up with a very cooperative spirit, hence some very good photographs.

"He'll Rip Your Lungs Out, Jim: Thoughts on Black Dog Syndrome

That is a great title!

It seems the women here at WOE are a modest group -- except for me,who's always shamelessly self-promoting -- for they don't promote themselves. So I'll do it for them, in this case, for Richelle Hawks, who has another great column up at Binnall of America. This week her Medusa's Ladder column discusses the black dog and "canine energy." As Richelle says, she's been "steeped in it" recently.

Richelle looks at the black dogs available for adoption at shelters and asks the obvious question: why? In doing so, she explores the mythic and folkloric history of the black dog, and our relationship to this Fortean archtype.

BOA's SEASON III FINALE WITH VALLEE!

I posted this at The Orange Orb as well, but want to promote the podcast with Vallee as well as help Tim with donations, so I'm posting it here as well.

Tim Binnall finished out Season III in a huge way; interview with the incomparable Jacques Vallee. Amazing, astounding, fantastic! Good for Tim, and that's good for us.

Tim started off the interview with a very brief bit of practicality: Binnall Audio is in the red, donate something. Listen, Tim brings all of us very fine interviews with the big names in esoterica, and it’s all for free. He’s one of the best interviewers in pod cast land. As Tim said, “No donation is too small” so whatever you can contribute, just go here and give what you can.

On to the interview. What I love is what they got to right off; Vallee said he “still doesn’t know” what UFOs are; Tim concurred, in his usual dry style, that “none of us do, though some think they know.” So true!

I’m not going to recap the entire interview here; you’ll need to listen to it yourself. But some points were made that resonated with me and I’ll just share them.

Of course they discussed the ETH, which Vallee is “against” but it’s not so simple. Vallee says that it may be that the ETH is part of the phenomena, but that the UFO phenomena, as a whole, is more than that. That’s an important distinction. I hope I did that justice.

In other words, any theory, Vallee says, has to explain everything about UFOs, which the ETH doesn’t do.

Vallee described one case he investigated, where the witnesses were disoriented as to the direction of the UFO. This is because witnesses who’ve had close encounters are in “a field of some kind” that causes this to happen. This is what happened to me and my husband in one case. Screen memory, cover memory, missing time and, to this day, arguments between us about the memory of the direction of not only the UFO, but us. I insist we were traveling East, seeing the UFO a mile west of our house, JIm insists we were traveling West, seeing the UFO. . . well, he’s not sure. Hmmm...Were we in “a field” of some kind that altered our perceptions? Certainly possible. Damn likely, given all the other high strangeness surrounding that sighting.

I had to laugh when Vallee said that there are many good researchers who want nothing to do with the internet UFO community, mainly due to the “insults” that are flung about. Hello, are you listening? You all know who you are. Knock it off.

Ah, I love this; the UFO phenomena purposely “hides itself” in order to push away science. As we well know.

And this: Occam’s Razor ust doesn't work when dealing with the UFO phenomena. I love it! VAllee pointed out that he “likes Occams’ Razor,” but when it comes to UFOs, it doesn’t work. Such a simple tool for such a complex phenomena.

Oh, there’s so much more and I only glossed over, in simplistic terms, some of what Vallee said. Just listen to the interview, and donate something to BOA!

Farah's Back From Roswell!

Farah Yurdozu is back from the Roswell Festival. You can read about it at The Green Room on UFO Magazine's blog.

I'm sure Farah will have lots to share with us later on! (hint...)

Okay, next year: I am definitely going to Roswell! (I say hopefully...)

Paintings: Spirits and Apparitions

A bit of shameless promotion, but also fits in with Women Of Esoterica, (since most of his paintings are of women.) Jim has a new category on his gallery; Spirits and Apparitions.

Visit his blog at James Rich Artist, or his gallery on Yessy.com.

New Blog: "UFO-Mary"

Okay, I did it. I don't like the title much, but I was stuck, I just couldn't think of anything that conveyed that it's about Marian Apparitions and UFOs in a paranormal, Fortean context. Anyway, here it is: UFO-Mary.

"UFOs and You"

I can't show the image here, because Yessy.com doesn't allow you to copy and paste images, which is a good thing, since it's someone's art work here. And I don't have access to the camera right now to upload it. (I did manage to copy the thumbnail shown here but it's small, go to the site for a larger image.)

But you can go here, and see a painting
Jim (James) did of me a few months ago. It's from a sketch he did of me almost thirty years ago; we were visiting people who lived up on the McKenzie River, and I was on the deck, reading. I wasn't really reading a UFO book, and there wasn't really a UFO in the sky at the time. (as far as I know.) But he added those elements just for me.

Creepy Clowns

It's a cliche for some, that clowns are creepy and some have a fear of clowns, but I don't care. I don't like them, they are creepy, and they do scare me. Kind of. More like piss me off, but that's my personality. I ain't scared of nobody, see! Anyway, I have something about creepy clowns and ufos on my Vintage U.F.O. blog; inspired by what I wrote for Trickster's Realm on Binnall, which will be up sometime Monday: MIBs, Clowns and Helicopters.

ART

This isn't esoteric, although some of my husband's -- Jim (James) Rich -- work can be thought of that way. Most of his work is pretty surreal, with titles that are equally surreal.

Anyway, I'm being shameless and promoting his work. He just now, as we speak, is putting up his artwork here.

Take a look! There's much more to come; after all, he has something like five hundred paintings. . .

Blog Discovery: Chess, Goddess and Everything

Haven't spent much time over there yet, but seems pretty cool! Great title for a blog.
I found it because I was looking at blogs that might have a similar theme to -- get ready now -- an idea I have for a new blog. That's all I'll say for now. Really, someone stop me. I promised myself I wouldn't start any more blogs, but I became inspired and just had to go there, once again. More on that later.

In the meantime, visit Chess, Goddess and Everything. Copy and past the link below, or click in the "link" box above to get there.

WOE Poll

There's a poll (for fun only) on the menu to your left. Vote and have fun! Thanks.

Too easy...

There's a remodeled site called Our Strange World on my yahoo homepage--I was browsing through it and came across an article about Sylvia Browne's final farewell tour; she was going on about how prolific she is:

My daughter says the funniest thing. She says, ‘Mom goes to the bathroom and comes out with a book.’

You don't even need to make up your own joke...

Tina Sena: Blinded by the Right

Tina Sena has a good article on her Esotericana column for Binnall of America: Blinded by the Right, about NASA intentionally blurring photos.

UFO´S AND WOMEN - A Few Thoughts on the Multiple Sighting Witness

Well, I am not sure what to say about this. I will think on it for a while. :-)
American Chronicle | UFO´S AND WOMEN - A Few Thoughts on the Multiple Sighting Witness

"Public are in denial over UFOs, says investigator"

Welsh UFO investigator Margaret Fry is co-founder of the Welsh Fellowship of Independent UFOlogists. She believes we’re being visited by aliens from space:
“Some people read about it as an interesting phenomenon and then forget about it. I don’t now how, really, because we’re being visited by beings from various planetary systems in outer space. How people can’t take an interest in that, I just don’t know.”
The artcile says that Wales has “long been a hot-bed of reported UFO activity.”

Roswell Beauty Queen?

What I find esoteric about this are her glasses . . .
The blog Pageant Cast News has a photo of a woman named Joan Marie, at the Roswell Fest.

Great new book from Nick Redfern

On one of Nick Redfern’s blogspots this morning I read that his latest book “There’s Something in the Woods: A Transatlantic Hunt for Monsters and the Mysterious” has now been published. It covers his cryptozoological investigations and monster hunts on both sides of the Atlantic over the last couple of years. You can read what Nick says about it here, where he will also be adding further posts about the contents of the book. Being a real fan of the subjects Nick covers, and the way he brings them to life in each of his books, and articles, I can’t wait for my copy to arrive. His books are ones that, once you start reading, you’ll have a real problem putting down until you reach the very end. I hope you’ll enjoy this latest offering as much as I know that I shall.

On Binnall of America This Week

On Binnall of America, we have Lesley’s newest Grey Matters article, UFO Flaps and the Media. In it she talks about the UK’s current UFO flap. I agree that not only the UK, but that UFO sighting reports have been increasing worldwide lately.

I also like Richard Thomas’s article for Room 101: The Sea Devils' Triangle: Is The Bermuda Triangle A Good Place For an "Alien" Base? How can you resist liking a writer who manages to tie in Dr. Who with the Bermuda Triangle?

Great news too regarding Binnall’s audio: this week’s guest is Linda Moultan Howe! (should be up late today or Monday, according to Lesley’s post at her Debris Field blog.) AND, as if that isn’t enough, the season finale is with Jacques Vallee! Yes! My god! I know! Too much. As always, Tim gets the most amazing guests.

Lots of other good stuff, as always, over there! Be sure to check out BOA regularly, for new articles, message board stuff, and the latest podcasts.

Joaquim Fernandes, PhD :What Really Happened at Fatima?

This article by Fernandes appeared on UFO Digest on June 9, so it’s a bit of old news, but I’m posting something about it because of my interest in Marian apparitions, Mary herself, and the book I just received recently: Heavenly Lights: The Apparitions of Fatima and the UFO Phenomenon, also by Fernandes, along with co-author Fina D'Armada.

One thing that I discovered in reading this article is the existence of this, the:
Multicultural Apparitions Research International Academic Network (Project MARIAN), which is coordinated by the Center for Transdisciplinary Studies in Consciousness (CTEC) at the University Fernando Pessoa, in Porto, Portugal.

I’m looking forward to finding out more about this organization. The article on UFO Digest isn’t much more than a plug for the book (s) but that’s okay, for one thing, they stress the fact the content consists of peer reviewed papers, the diverse body of people involved in this area, etc.

There are UFO and Fortean researchers involved in studying Marian Apparitions in context of UFOs, (Jacques Vallee of course, etc.) but many more shy away, it seems. Maybe it’s because of the religious factor, I don’t know. Or it might seem too mystical -- and therefore too “New Agey” for some -- to take seriously.

For myself, I remain intrigued and continue to explore the idea that Marian apparitions share a relationship with UFOs, or, some sort of Fortean/supernatural phenomenon that isn’t religious, only interpreted that way.
